HARRINGAY LOCAL STORE | LONDON, UK | 2014
With the tagline ‘Not Another Tesco’, this organic food store in North London embodies a new generation of socially conscious, independent shops that dare to be different. The vision was to create a local institution – focusing on free-range British meat and dairy, artisan bread from local bakeries and personally sourced craft beers and wines. Owners and self-confessed ‘music heads’, Paul and Ebony Harding, even find space for vinyl records and vintage arcade games.
A collaboration with branding agency, Bold & Bold, an eclectic mix of reclaimed materials and natural finishes created a warm, authentic, stripped-back feel. The marble-topped front counter was clad in a vintage gymnasium floor – offering irregular bursts of colour to draw eyes from the street. Resin-coated concrete flooring, exposed metal displays, tile cladding and industrial steel shelving were chosen to give the organic produce on the shelves top billing.
Taking just over a month from concept to completion, the collective spirit of the design and build process was not only rewarding but integral to the outlook of this project – creating an authentic space stitched into the local community.
