THE SERPENTINE BAR & KITCHEN | LONDON, UK | 2017
A contemporary bistro located inside Patrick Gwynne's modernist masterpiece on the banks of the Serpentine lake in London’s Hyde Park.
A ‘country living within the city’ aesthetic looked to provide a premium dining space with a longer-dwell capacity through inventive use of zonal spaces. A large, curved, double-sided banquette was designed to accentuate the cylindrical structure of the building. This delivered dining-height seating that served as a counterpart to the lower lounge soft-seating and more intimate dining spaces below the central atrium. A barbeque kiosk on the lower terrace and additional grab-and-go areas supplemented the existing alfresco options.
The building’s period features, including an eccentric floor design clad in rare Brescia Violetta marble and a balcony with pre-cast terrazzo seating cantilevering over the lake, provided the inspiration for the neo-modernist approach inside.
The proposed redesign and renovation of this iconic building for British caterers, Benugo, formed the basis for their successful renegotiation of the lease for this Grade II listed property.
